ANGOLA : Petro Beat 1º De Agosto, Get Closer to Winning Title
Petro de Luanda beat 1º de Agosto on Tuesday in Luanda, in a game for the second round of the senior male national basketball championship, thus standing two victories to conquer the title.
With two rounds left to finish the competition, Petro are closer to retaining the trophy. They only need to win the next two games, namely against Interclube and ASA.
Tuesday's clash was quite balanced with the two teams showing their determination to win the game.
Petro de Luanda, however, used well their current good form moment, as well as the high spirits for having beaten their opponent in the final of the Angolan Cup League, winning that competition.
In the last few seconds of the game the score was a draw, but to Petro's luck, the American centre, Frederick Gentry, was fouled, getting two free throws, one of which was a score, giving the sweated victory to Petro.
1º de Agosto even attempted to score in the last two seconds, in a desperate attack that did not work.
Petro's athletes celebrated their 84/83 win - the fifth in a row - over their old rivals, probably with the certainty that this championship's trophy was on its way to the club's headquarters as well.
With this victory Petro de Luanda lead the competition with 12 points, followed by 1º de Agosto with 09.
