UGANDA : Marines Take on Heaters in Opener

Kampala
CHAMPIONS Nkumba-Marines and newly promoted Makerere Youth Heaters provide today's main attraction as the 2007 national basketball league starts off at Lugogo Indoor stadium.
The two open the senior men's league that comprises 12 teams. The similarities between both teams are many, most notably their shared sense of destiny and the anticipated thrilling match-ups.
Two-time league Most Valuable Player Norman Blick shoulders the burden of securing Marines an opening victory today.
He comes up against Heaters' new signing Michael Kariuki whom the Makerere side lured from Sadolin Power. Kariuki's collection of blocked shots, rebounds and points will be a thorn in Blick's side as Marines' Karrol Bisereko battles to stop an underlooked Joseph Ikong (Heaters) from dominating the boards.
Blick will be assisted by reigning MVP Boniface Okello, Karl Mugalu, Paul Mwaka and Salim Ali as the Marines aim for a positive league start.
Others in today's fray are Sadolin Power who for the past two years have finished second in the league. They take on Entebbe-based Knight Riders.
Expectations will be high in the KCC Leopards camp when they face off with league debutantes Uganda Christian University in the women's highlight match.
Leopards should be wary of UCU's trio of 2005 MVP Brenda Mbone, Lorraine Othieno and Cilia Asila who left their own fold to join the Mukono-based university in 2005.
There are also 12 teams in the women's league.
Today - Lugogo Indoor
Opening ceremony- 5.30pm
Men
Marines v MUK Heaters
Power v Knight Riders
Women
Leopards v UCU
