UGANDA : Clumsy Marines Forfeit Key Points

Lugogo

KCC Leopards and Sadolin Power registered wins over UCU Mukono and Knight Riders respectively on the opening day of the national basketball league but defending champions Nkumba Marines forfeited the points, despite the players' presence at Lugogo.
Karrol Bisereko, Karl Mugalu, Barnes Ankunda, Moses Olobo, Norman Blick and Donald Blick all turned up but team coach Timothy Odeke said they had written to Fuba, asking for postponement of the game.Odeke argues that with students on holiday, it's hard to raise a full team. Nevertheless Fuba officials insist that Marines is a club and should be able to honour all fixtures and that's why a walkover was awarded to Heaters.

Last year's runners-up KCC Leopards unbelievably rolled with newcomers UCU Mukono in the first half but took control of last quarter to win 49-32 on Friday evening.

Becky Akullo's 10 points, Linda Tamale 8 and Annet Nakiwu 7 gave KCC the win. Cilia Asila and Brenda Mbone combined for 12 points while last season's Most Valuable Player (MVP) Flavia Aketcho, who also made a surprise switch from defending champions Lady Bucks added 6.

Wilbrod Oketcho marked his return from injury with 15 points for Power, Richard Balemwa collected 14 while debutante Stephen Mwesigye added 13 in their 91-70 win.

Debutants Knight Riders, without star point guard Ivan Enabu, now a UCU Mukono player, had Collins Mukiza (20) and Derrick Mbusi (13) reach double figures.
