By NASONGELYAKILYINGA
THE Union Basketball League is expected to start at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam today with over 15 teams from Mainland and Isles competing for the top honours.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) Secretary General Lawrence Cheyo said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that preparations for the event were complete.
“Everything is in place ahead of the league, which would involve both men and women teams. We expect to release the fixtures this evening,” he said.
Cheyo named some of the men teams for the tournament as the newly crowned National Basketball league (NBL) Champions Savio, Oilers, JKT and Bees of Tabora all from the Mainland. He said the Mainland’s women teams are Lady lioness, Jeshi Stars, JKT Queens and Mapinduzi of Dodoma.
The TBF boss named Zanzibar teams as Tonado, Nyuki and Rangers. Cheyo said eight Zanzibar teams would be known after the completion of the Isle’s basketball mini league tomorrow.
Zanzibar hosted last year’s event where Cargo Ladies and Savio won the tournament in the women and men’s categories respectively. However, Cargo Ladies despite being the defending champions will not feature in this year’s event after it failed to qualify.
