TANZANIA : JKT make furious start

JKT men started defending their title well by defeating Rangers of Zanzibar 93-44 in the opening match of the on-going Union Basketball League match at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Monday.
The Mainland team led 28-12 in the first quarter before stretching their lead to 47-20 until the half of the game.
The defending champions lead 67-35 in the third quarter.
A good combination of Charles Makene, Ashrafu Haroun and Tumsifu Apolo, helped JKT won the game.
Makene scored 17 points while Haroun and Tumsifu scored 16 and 8 points respectively for the winners. Ranger`s Hafidhi Mgeni and Abdu Ally scored 11 and 12 points respectively.
Meanwhile, the government promised to work closely with Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) in preparations for the next year`s championship.
The Minister for State, Vice-President Office, Union Affairs, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, made the promise when he opened the league.
`This will be in line with our efforts to strengthen our Union between Zanzibar and Mainland. My ministry will play a great role in co-ordinating the event next year,` said Dr. Mwinyi.
On his side, the TBF President, Richard Kasesela, said the federation would next year stage the event in Pemba as a way to strenghten the Union.
The Union Basketball League is expected to end on April 26, the Union Day.
