SEYCHELLES : Baya Basketball Tournament
Organised by the Baya Sports Club, the tournament dribbles off at 5 p.m. today and will continue tomorrow and on Sunday at the Palais des Sports.
The top six finishers in last year’s Men’s division 1A league championship have all accepted an invitation to participate in the tournament. They have been divided into two pools of three – A and B. Baya are in pool A along with Premium Cobras and Cascade Bullets, while pool B is made up of PLS Hawks, MBU Rockers and SMB Razorbacks.
All action will be at Victoria Gymnasium on day one – today – and four matches have been scheduled. The order of matches is as follows: Baya v Cascade Bullets (pool A), PLS Hawks v SMB Razorbacks (pool B), Premium Cobras v Cascade Bullets (pool A) and MBU Rockers v SMB Razorbacks (pool B).
The remaining two group matches – Baya v Premium Cobras (pool A) and MBU Rockers v PLS Hawks (pool B) – followed by the two semifinals – winners of pool A v runners-up pool B and winners pool B v runners-up pool A – will be played at the Palais des Sports on Saturday as from 2 p.m.
The Roche Caïman venue will host the third place play-off match at 3 p.m. and the final at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The tournament winners will receive a cash prize of between R1,500 and R2,000 and a floating trophy. Other than trophies, the runners-up will pocket R1,000 and the third place finishers R500. In fact, all participating teams are also expected to receive trophies.
All Fédération internationale de basket-ball amateur (Fiba) rules and regulations will be applied during the tournament. A player who is disqualified in a match will not be allowed to take part in any other matches during the tournament.
The organisers have decided that all group matches will last 32 minutes – 8 minutes each quarter. As for the semifinals, third place play-off match and the final, they will last the usual 40 minutes – 10 minutes each quarter.
Tickets will cost R10 for children below 12 years old and R20 for children above 12 years old, and adults.
