RWANDA : APR lift Challenge trophy

APR basketball club opened their 2007 campaign on a high note, lifting the inaugural Kigali Challenge Cup in a tournament that ended at Petit Stade at the weekend.After taking Huye through a 123-57 lessons at the semi-finals, the 2006 national basketball league champions (APR) continued with its winning ways in the final to post a well-deserved 100-74 victory over Cercle Sportif de Kigali (CSK) who had earlier stunned the crowd with a 72-56 win over Espoir in the semi-finals.In all their games, they scored in excess of 100 points which is a sign that the side is in flawless form.
“The team played extremely well. The boys played like they were desperately in need of huge scores. I think if we keep playing like this, we have a good chance of hitting our targets this year,” APR’s coach Cliff Owuor told Times Sports.
The event attracted 14 clubs in both categories (men and women), two of which were making their maiden appearance in local basketball competitions. These included the event sponsors (CSK) and Huye.
Despite their loss in the final, CSK showed their potential and could be a threat in future basketball competitions.
Rwanda National University (UNR) claimed the ladies’ silverware after a 76-50 victory over APR.
