ZIMBABWE : Moyo jets in for basketball champs

UNITED States based basketball star Elijah Moyo arrived in the country yesterday ahead of the joint preliminaries of the 2007 All-Africa Games and the Africa Cup of Nations.

The championships are set to run from February 26 to March 3 at the City Sports Centre.
Moyo, who is based at Philadelphia College in the United States.
Team manager Langton Moyo said the former Cameo star was scheduled to join camp in the evening after being given time to visit his family.
“Preparations for the tournament are going on smoothly. Moyo arrived this morning aboard the British Airways.
“We are taking these games seriously and I am confident that we will qualify for the finals in both tournaments,” he said.
Moyo, together with the Namibia based Mpumelelo Dhlabangane, captain Farai Tumbare, Duncan Shenje and Alan Tegunde are expected in to steer the Zimbabwean ship to glory.
Meanwhile, Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) is still to get sponsorship for the joint preliminaries.
BUZ president Addison Chiware confirmed the development, but allayed fears of the country failing to host the games.
“We are still to secure funds for the games, but there are a number of promises. I am sure something will prop up in the coming few days.
“I am very confident that we will host the games. We are negotiating with a number of sponsors who will bankroll us during the championships.
“All the six countries have confirmed participation. There is no way we can let go the golden opportunity that has come our way,” he said.
There are fears that BUZ may fail to raise funds to host the championships, which will involve six Southern African countries.
Two top teams at the Zone Six basketball championships, from the men and women categories will represent the Southern African region at the All-Africa Games and the Nations Cup to be hosted by Algeria and Angola respectively.
Zimbabwe’s chances of qualifying for the finals of both tournaments are bright especially given that Angola, who posed the biggest threat, will not be involved in the preliminaries.
Angola automatically qualified for both tournaments by virtue of being the defending champions of the All -Africa Games and hosts of the Africa Nations Cup.
Senegal will host the women’s tournament in August.
Favourites South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia are all taking part in the competition.
