RWANDA : Ruhezamihigo scoops MVP award

Hamza Ruhezamihigo was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Zone V basketball Championships/ African Cup of Nations (CAN) / All Africa Games Qualifiers that winded up yesterday at Amahoro petit stade.
Despite a rather blow standard performance during the competition’s final game against Burundi, the prestigious award was well still within Ruhezamihigo’s reach after his spectacular performances in previous games against Egypt, Ethiopia and Kenya.
The shooting guard was one of Rwanda’s major weapons against her opponents and on a number of occasions, the Canadian based player single handedly rescued the team and lifted them to glory.
On receiving the award, the 21 year-old was overwhelmed and said that it was his greatest achievement.
“I feel so honored to be voted MVP. I have won awards in the past but non means so much to me like this particular one. It’s a great achievement on my part,” the calm player told Times Sport on phone.
Rwanda also produced the event’s best defenders in the men and ladies’ category. Valere Kajeguhakwa a.k.a Bunene and Claudette Mugwaneza claimed the awards while Egypt’s Ahmed Monir (men) and Kenya’s Gladyce Wanyama (women) collected top scorers’ accolades. On top of the top scorer’s honor, Wanyama was also voted MVP in the ladies category.
Following the event performances, Egypt and Kenya (women) have automatic qualifications to the All Africa Games scheduled for July in Algeria as well as the CAN event slated for September in Angola.
Rwanda men team finished in the first runner’s up spot behind Egypt following their win over Burundi. The win was very vital as it may have earned the country it’s first ever CAN appearance. According to Fiba officials who over-ran the event, Rwanda’s chances of taking part in the 2007 CAN event are high but they insisted that Fiba had the final ruling on who would make it for the CAN event.
