KENYA : Kenyans beat Burundi in qualifiers

Kenya national women’s side crushed Burundi 88-31 in their opening All Africa Games qualifying match played at Amahoro Petit Stadium.
The victors launched raids straight from the start as a Millicent Anyango’s shot glanced off the rim.
Shortly afterwards, Gladys Wanyama scored the opener after connecting on a rebound off a miss by Eunice Ouma.
Caroline Achieng’ then followed with two free shots before Wanyama got on the mark again. Claudette Mugwaneza responded with a three-pointer for Burundi, but Anyango added more free shots as Kenya easily costed to a 26-5 score at the first quarter break.
In the second quarter, Wanyama, Holda Luvandwa and Joyce Makungu hit the target at will making the scores 51-11 at the end of the first half. Despite a tough third quarter, the visitors still won it 14-9.
Kalume Florence, the Burundian guard was the darling of the crowd as she mesmerised Kenyans with her amazing dribbles, but they still trailed 11-23 in the last quarter.
Luvandwa led with 17 points, Makungu connected for 15, Wanyama managed 10, while Rebecca Sarange chipped in with nine. Burundi had 11 from Kalume.
This easy win confirmed that Kenya would book a ticket to Pan Africa Games in Algeria in July. The two sides will meet again as the three teams play each other twice.
Meanwhile, the East and Central Africa club championships slated for Bujumbura, Burundi, in April have now been pushed forward, host organisers confirmed on Tuesday.
The revelation was made by Federation Basketball du Burundi (Febabu) vice-president Alexis Songomwa during an interview with SportFest at the Amahoro Petit Stadium.
He said that long rains in April will not make it possible to have the tournament, saying it has been decided that they be moved to August.
