KENYA : Kenyan women win as the men’s side lose to Rwanda
By Dann O’were in Kigali
Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the ninth All Africa Games got a jolt when Rwanda stunned them 75-64 in a hard fought match at Amahoro Petit Stadium.
This means Kenya must beat Egypt on Thursday to have a mathematical chance of qualifying. Rwanda’s Canadian-based Hamza Muhezamihigo hit the opening three-pointer and the victors were on the driving seat for a 23-5 first quarter advantage.
In the second quarter, Kenya put up a mediocre performance as Rwanda roared on, going to the break with a comfortable 42-26 lead.
Coach Ronny Owino changed tactics after the breather, assigning Simon Mugambi to check dangerous Hamza.
He kept him scoreless as Kenya roared to a 47-37 margin. It was Ancette Wafula who ignited this superb run as he scored eight points.
The raid continued as the last quarter began with Dan Gaiko hitting a basket for 49-51 and Yoni Wanambiro scoring to lock the duel for the first time at 51-51.
Cliff Ochieng swished a three-ponter and Kenya celebrated their first lead at 54-53 inside five minutes. Kenya failed to respond losing the tie in the last minute when Hamza raced for a dunk before a three pointer by Uwineza sealed their fate.
Wafula scored 16 points, Ochieng 11, while Gaiko had 10.
