KENYA : ISK Lionesses maul Pangani
International School of Kenya basketball Lionesses pawed their way to a second victory in four years in the invitational International Schools of Kenya under-18 girls’ championships yesterday by mauling Pangani Girls.
Pangani were marked out from the start as they launched their title defence. They were reduced to spectators as ISK ran rings around them in defence to pick an early lead. However, they settled down and took control but failed to find last year’s form as ISK won 17-15.
The girls event was played on a round robin format after Moi Nairobi and Imani schools failed to show up.
In the boys category, St Austin’s held off a late surge from St. Mary’s to claim the silverware in a tight final. ISK fought hard to take the bronze medal edging out a determined Rusinga School.
It was St Austin’s sharp striking which proved useful as they limited their rivals to defensive play and went into recess with a comfortable 24-16 lead.
However, St Austin’s threw in everything in the second half as they sought to narrow the gap but failed to claim the lead as their opponents out-muscled them. They moved to the fourth quarter trailing 38-27 before Moses Mogeni and Shaki Chrispus took control and scored several baskets but it was not enough to pull them level when the buzzer sounded with scores reading 48-32.
