ZIMBABWE : Ex-Cameo players form team

FORMER Cameo women’s basketball players have formed a new team called Stanbic.

The team, to be bankrolled by Stanbic Bank, will be playing in the Harare Basketball Association (HBA) women’s league.
Aisha Tsimba, a team official confirmed the latest development but said she will be in a position to divulge more information when the season starts.
“I can confirm that a new team called Stanbic will be playing league basketball this season,” she said.
HBA administrator Simon Lawson also confirmed the team had registered.
“Stanbic has been registered as a women’s basketball team. They have also registered their players and most of them are former Cameo players.
“The club becomes the ninth team in the league that is if we retain all our clubs from last season,” he said.
Players that are set to star for Stanbic include big names in basketball such as Regina Chisale, Margaret Magwaro and Tsimba. The team is likely to be formidable given that the players have an array of experience having won quite a number of trophies with Cameo.
Most of the players were left stranded after Cameo proprietor and coach Roderick Takawira decided that only school going players should play for his team.
Takawira has only registered men’s ‘B’ League team and is already selling the Cameo’s ‘A’ League franchise.
Lawson said the season is expected to start next weekend after an audit of the clubs.
“The season was expected to start this weekend but we have to move it to next week as clubs are still registering.
“Also there is a preseason tournament whose semi-final matches will be played this weekend,” he said.
