NATIONAL basketball teams have stepped up preparation for the East and Central Africa Zone Five championships scheduled for Kigali, Rwanda.
The tournament slated for November 29 to December 4, will draw teams from Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, Tanzania, Burundi, Zanzibar, Djibouti, Seychelles, Somalia, and Rwanda.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Boniface Okello, will lead Carroll Bisereko, Norman Blick, Isaac Afidra, Henry Malinga, Ben Komakech, Allan Tawodda, David Kiberu, Eric Malinga and Sam Obol who are likely to feature on the men’s team.

Robert Ndamagye, who led the men’s team to the regional title last year, returns as head coach, while Yunus Nkutu replaces Nimrod Kaboha as the women’s head coach.
“We are going to engage the team in various build up matches as we prepare to defend our title in Kigali,” Ndamagye said.
Uganda and Kenya are the men and women’s defending champions respectively.
The winners in both categories will represent Zone Five in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Algiers, Algeria.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has appealed for funds for the teams’ preparation ahead of the regional championship.
The local season closed two weeks ago with Nkumba Marines beating Sadolin Power to lift the MTN Basketball League crown for the second straight year. The women’s title went to Lady Bucks who defeated KCC Leopards in the playoff finals.
