NIGERIA : Warriors, ABC, Aogosto in Good Start

Defending champion of the 21st FIBA Africa Champions Club Competition holding in Lagos, ABC basketball club of Cote d'Ivoire began its title defence on a good note yesterday when it ran over ESPN basketball club of South Africa by 80-65 points of (20-10, 20-16, 27-19 and 13-20).

The defending champion was led in scoring by Guy Serge Touali with 26 points, 6 rebounds, one assist and 3 steals, while the trio of Asshe Kokoun, Aristide Yao and Blaise Amalabian added 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
ESPN trio of Q. Denyssen, N. Mothiba and T. Okobo led their team in scoring with 13, 12 and 11 points.

Inter Club basketball club of Congo Brazaville got the better of Kenyan Commercial Bank basketball club of Nairobi with an 82-67 points win of 24-16, 13-22, 25-17 and 20-12.

The third encounter saw one of Africa basketball power-house and 2004 champion, Despotivo 1 de Aogosto of Angola outplayed Nigeria Champion Plateau Peaks 88-59.
The encounter which thousands of fans that watched the top of the billing encounter cheering the visitor who played better than their opponent.Unlike the Peaks who rely on Stanley Gumut to do all the scoring, Gumut led the floor with 30 points the Angolan scoring was done by more than three players, with the highest scorer Mayzer Alexandre who scored 16 points, the duo of Joaquim Gomes and Abdel Moussa had 14 points each, Olimpio Capriano contributed 12 points while captain Miguiel Lutonda added 10 points.

Host team, Dodan Warriors had the better part of its opponent, Zenith basketball club of Cote d'Ivoire with a 75-54 points spanking of 20-05, 26-12, 14-25 and 15-12 to give Nigerian fans something to cheer for the night.

In other matches played on day-one of the championship African Sports of Cote d'Ivoire defeated ASB Onatra of DR Congo by 66-49 points while Atletico Petroleos of Angola handed down a comprehensive beating to BACK of Guinea 105-62 points.
