NIGERIA : Angolan clubs can’t stop winning as Dodan Warriors taste first defeat

The Angolan teams at the 21st Africa Champions Cup for men holding at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos are riding roughshod over other teams and likely paving way for an all Angolan final on November 26, 2006.

Smiles in the camp of host and Nigeria’s second flagbearer, Dodan Warriors were cut shot yesterday when Petro Atletico of Angola handed Sam Ahmedu’s Warriors a 98-73 defeat moments after another Angolan team Primera De Agosto took Africa Sports of Cote d’Ivoire on a dunking lesson with a whitewash of 101-47.

The Warriors who had won their first two games before yesterday’s loss will be looking towards placing second in the group by picking maximum points in their remaining games especially today’s game against Guinea’s BACK who had abandoned a match earlier over agitation for allowances.

The Guineans were handed a two-point defeat, 69-67 by Kenya Commercial Bank in the first match of yesterday before Inter Club of Congo beat Zenith of Cote d’Ivoire 82-44.

Africa Sports who parade a Nigerian, Shola Alayande could not stop the Primera De Agosto who were shooting from every angle to lead the first quarter by 32-14 and then wrapped up the first half by 49-20. The west Africans could only manage eight points on resumption of the second half and third quarter as to the 39 points garnered by the Angolans to end that quarter at 78-28.

Coach of Plateau Peaks, Austin Gompil who had expressed high optimism of his team making great strides in the championship could be seeking to make amends when he tackles Onatra of Congo Democratic Republic today.

The championship enters day four today with the Group games from which the quarter-finalists will emerge. The final comes up on Sunday to decide which club takes over the mantle from defending Champions, ABC of Cote d’Ivoire or if they will retain the title.
