KENYA : KPA ordered to play final today

The Kenya Ports Authority women basketball team has been directed to play their playoff final match against Telkom Kenya today or lose the first leg match on technicality.

Kenya Basketball Federation fixtures secretary Steve Nyakina said it was the responsibility of the KBF to draw the fixtures, adding that the assertion by KPA that they could not play today was unacceptable.

"We have been drawing the fixtures since the year began and no team has raised any queries. We are now wondering why KPA should complain when we programme them to play Telkom on Friday instead of Saturday," Nyakina said.

Nyakina said KPA had protested against the KBF decision to fix their match for today instead of Saturday, claiming that the KPA gymnasium was booked.

Mombasa Baptist

"We have received KPA’s letter stating that they will not be able to play on Friday and want the match to remain on Saturday or be rescheduled to Sunday," he said, but was quick to point that the match would be played at the Mombasa Baptist ground if the gym was not available.

Nyakina said Telkom Kenya had made all the travel arrangements including booking the accommodation, all which, he said, would go to waste if the match is put off.

KBF vice-chairman Henry Shihemi said the referees for the match had already been dispatched to Mombasa and advised the dockers to take to the field or lose the match.

The league fixtures, Shihemi said, had to be juggled with to fit the situation available adding that the situation could have been even different had KCB Lions, who are currently in Nigeria for the Africa Masculine championships, qualified for the finals.

Nairobi Hospital

In another development, Ronnie Owino, the national basketball teams men’s and women’s head coach, has been admitted to the Nairobi Hospital.

According to women head coach Thomas Smarts Olumbo, who visited Owino at the hospital on Wednesday, the national tactician had a swollen finger and was supposed to be operated on.
