KENYA : ISL – Lady Buffs Hit Hillcrest To win ISL Championship

Rift Valley Academy- RVA girl’s basketball team, Lady Buffs, recovered from eight points down to upset Hillcrest School 31-28 in the finals of the International Schools League-ISL. The game, played on Friday at Rosslyn Academy, saw Hillcrest go up 8-6 in the first quarter after good plays from Barbara Kithinji, Wairimu Gitau, and Nelia Kaburu. Julissa tied the game at 8-8 for RVA early in the second quarter, however, Hillcrest maintained their form through towering and dominant center- Barbara Kithinji who destroyed RVA at both ends of the court, to give Hillcrest a 20-12 lead at the break.
The third quarter tipped off to a slow start, as both teams struggled to settle down. Hillcrest pointman-Kithinji fouled out with 3:43 remaining, as RVA took advantage of that to punish Hillcrest through Mumbi, Julissa, Chris Vinton and Esther Kivinda as they closed in within 3-points (23-26) as the buzzer went off.
With Kithinji out, RVA dominated the final quarter, as they tied the game at 28-28 after a superb baseline move by Esther Kivinda with 2:17 to go. Chris Vinton gave RVA the lead 30-28 with 1:53 to go, as the RVA Buffaloes Fans went wild. Hillcrests forward, Sally got an opportunity to tie the game after she was fouled, but missed both free throws, allowing Kivinda to seal the sweet victory for RVA at the other end. Kivinda Esther (R) had 13 points for RVA, while Barbara Kithinji had 14 points despite fouling out in the third quarter.

Hillcrest had eliminated Peponi School 54-22 in the semis, while RVA Lady Buffs had eliminated Rosslyn Academy after a 33-26 win. The RVa-Rosslyn semi had tied at 22-22; before Chris Vinton gave RVA a 24-22 lead with 6 seconds to end of the third quarter. RVA never looked back after that, outscoring Rosslyn 9-4 for the victory.
