KENYA : Pirates Ambush Lions On the Last Day

Kenya Commercial Bank Lions completed their basketball Premier League pre-season fixtures on a low note when they lost 63-66 to Kenyatta University Pirates at Nyayo Stadium on Tuesday.
The Lions, the East, Central and Southern Africa club champions, finished fourth with 20 points.They won seven matches and lost six in the second leg and will face pre-season winners and defending champions Ulinzi Warriors in the best-of-three play-offs semi-final from November 4.

Ulinzi completed their 2006 programme on a clean sheet with 28 points from 14 straight victories.

Pirates ambushed the fast-fading Lions with Philip Dinga shooting 100 percent to lead 21-17 in the first quarter.

The bankers gave a good fight in the second quarter, in which they went up 21-13.

The varsity lads, who were battling for two points to survive relegation, stretched Lions to limit with Dinga, Paul Ojuoga and Griffin Ligare scoring baskets at will.

Pirates comfortably led 38-34 at half- time.

The students remained too smart for the wounded Lions as they poured in baskets that saw them lead 16-11 and 16-14 in the third and fourth quarters.
Dinga scored 23 points while much-improved David Otiso hit 17 for Lions.

In another match, Fred Magana scored 22 as University of Nairobi's Terrorists registered a 88-64 win over International Christian Centre.
ICC, who finished bottom with 16 points, had made a good start, leading 33-24 at half-time.
Terrorists mounted pressure to lead 27-12 and 24-19 in the last two quarters.
Nelson Njau scored 20 points for ICC, who completed their 14 match programme with two wins and 12 losses.

In the women's tie, Pamela Sinda poured in 14 points as Yana ended the pre-season with a convincing 73-34 victory over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The Juja-based students went down 40-17 at half-time with former international Joyce Makungu replying with 11 points.

Yana scooped the fourth point on their first competition attempt to book a date with champions Kenya Ports Authority in the play-offs semi-final on Saturday at 2 pm.
