ZIMBABWE : Four Teams Pull Out of HBA Pre-Season Tourney
By Paul Munyuki
Harare
FOUR teams have pulled out of the Harare Basketball Association pre-season tournament, which gets underway tomorrow while a new team -- Chitungwiza Blades -- have registered to play in the league.
Army side Black Rhinos, Celtics, Mufakose Hawks and South Central pulled out yesterday.
No reasons have been given for the decision by the teams to pull out.
The HBA has centralised the tournament and games that were originally scheduled for Mabvuku, City Sports Centre and Dzivaresekwa will now be held at Belvedere Technical Teachers' College.
Varsity Leopards have also been moved from Pool D to Pool C after the organisers seeded the teams according to how they finished at the end of last season.
HBA administrator and tournament director Simon Lawson said only the teams in Pool A will remain at Kambuzuma.
"The women's games will also be at Belvedere and so we can not congest one venue when there can be an alternative.
"Mufakose Hawks, Black Rhinos and Celtics have pulled out of the tournament but we also have new comers Chitungwiza Blades who have registered with the HBA.
"We want the teams to get a lot of play time and with that in mind we are planning on the teams playing classification games if they do not qualify for the semi-finals.
"All group games will be on this while the semi's and the finals have been set for next weekend and we are yet to decide on the venue," said Lawson.
