KENYA : Mombasa Bag Gold for Kenya
By Philip Onyango
Dar Es Salaam
Mombasa High School girls basketball team earned Kenya its first gold medal when they beat Kibuli High School from Uganda 69-35 to retain the basketball title as the East Africa Secondary school games entered crucial stages at the Dar es Salaam University basketball courts.
Mombasa who finished the five team championships unbeaten after beating Tigoi Girls 80-34 in an earlier match were all over their otherwise skilled opponents who put up stiff resistance in the first quarter.
Six foot-six Beatrice Awino, playing her last match before flying to the United States on Tuesday for a six-year basketball scholarship at the Union University, dwarfed her opponents scoring a game high 38 points.
The other scorers for Mombasa High were Brenda Wasuda (18) while Everlyne Adhiambo managed 10.
Kibuli replied through Hatima Karima who scored 17 points while Nakabugo Assumpta managed 11 points.
Tigoi girls finished second after beating Don Bosco from Burundi 51-42 in another match which the Burundi team had earlier boycotted after citing frustrations from the Uganda referees during their match with Nabisunza on Wednesday.
In boys basketball, Laiser Hill Academy beat Aquinas 68-56 in a tough semi final match to qualify for the finals.
They will meet the winner between Tanzania's Tageta and Makongo Secondary.
