ZAMBIA : ZBA scouts for K50m

THE Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) is scouting for K50 million to send the Under 18 boy’s team to the Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by South Africa at the end of the month.

In an interview yesterday, ZBA general secretary Mwembe Kaona said the Under 18 team’s participation in the tournament will be a good experience for the team.

“Their participation in the Africa Cup will help the players shape up in readiness for the 2011 All-Africa Games to be hosted by Zambia,” he said.

Kaona said the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) Africa granted Zambia an automatic entry to take part in the event because of the team’s impressive performance at the just-ended SADC Games in Windhoek.

He said he was happy with the invitation because it showed that Zambian basketball was being appreciated by the international motherbody.

“I am humbled by the invitation as it shows that the progress being made by the game in the country is being appreciated at international level,” Kaona said.
Zambia minted silver at the SADC Games after winning four out of five fixtures.

The Under 18 Africa Cup Of Nations basketball tournament is scheduled for July 28- August 6 in Durban.
Other countries expected to participate are Angola, Burkina Faso,Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa.
