SWAZILAND : Poor turnout grounds basketball league
THE Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA) is disappointed with the poor attendance of teams in a tournament held at the Coronation Park on Saturday.
Only five teams were in attendance, whilst SNBA had expected eight to register for their league which is scheduled to start month end.
League Secretary Wandile Lokotfwako said they were not happy about the apparent failure to register the teams because they are itching to kick-start the league as soon as possible.
"Last year we failed to play our league and by the look of things this year will be no exception. We want to start playing notwithstanding that we still do not have a sponsor, as we will sort that at a later stage," he said.
Lokotfwako said they would only be able to start the league after six teams had registered.
However, the tournament that was scheduled to take place continued unabated.
Five teams that participated were Super Stars, Cubs, Jazz, Malkerns Royals and Chosen Few.
Chosen Few were crowned champions after beating Super Stars in the finals. They walloped Stars 33-28 after displaying unparalleled skill during the game.
Jazz humiliated Malkerns Royals 38-14.
Chosen Few qualified for the finals after beating Cubs and Jazz 38-20 and 28-23 respectively. Super Stars easily sailed to finals as they overcame Cubs and Malkerns Royals.
SNBA Coach Penga Vunga said the standard of play was high and said he was hoping the league would eventually kick off because there were too few tournaments.
"The players are supposed to be kept busy through out. Now as they are not playing they are forced to wait for tournaments. The league can keep the players preoccupied throughout the year," he said.
