KENYA : KU Pirates stun regional champs KCB Lions in double
Kenyatta University "Pirates" put up a spirited fight and stunned East and Central Africa Club champions KCB Lions 83-82 in double overtime in a cracking Premier League tie at Nyayo National Stadium gynmnasium.
The upbeat, who have taken the fight to the top guns lately played their hearts out and were on top in the first three quarters before KCB went ahead 45-44 in the last.
In normal time, both teams were deadlocked 61-61 after Martin Obure failed to hit both free throws with 0:02 seconds left to play. He made one forcing the first OT to the delight of the small crowd.
The first extra time was again all drama. It was a stalemate as both teams struggled in vain to win the game.It was tied again 73-73 in the second before KU heroics started to show.
Griffin Ligare hit 21 points, Paul Ojuoga had 19 and Martin Obure 12 for KU who together with their vertan coach Gitau Waringo immediately swarmed the court in celebration after the final whistle sounded.
David Otiso hit 28, Greg Odera 19 and Ben Mureithi 14 before he limped off injured.Waringo said that his boys fighting spirit gave them this win that they deserved.
United States International University (USIU) blanked International Christian Center (ICC)87-74 in another match. Yoni Wanambiro scored 26 points while Abel Nson nailed 5 for USIU who led 41-33 a the break.
Yana were whipped 64-46 by Sprite Storms in a game that saw Hilda Luvandwa hit 19 points for the winners while Caroline Achieng managed 19 for the losers.
Telkom crushed University of Nairobi "Dynamites " 118-25 in aone sided demolition. Telkomled 60-9 at the breather and had Caroline Achieng posting 19 and Arato with 13.
USIU "Flames" crushed Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) 63-38. Angela Okoth shot 18 points, Mitchelle Otinda hit 17 and Samba Mjoma added 14.
For sad Jkuat, Mercy Njuguna scored 14 points while former national team player Joyce Alividza managed 10 for the students whose coach Charles Goro says continue by the day.
