The management of First Bank Sports Council recently took a proactive measure ahead the starting date for the 2006 edition of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF organised National Women Club Championship sponsored by top player in the Nigeria banking sector, Zenith Bank Plc and the Lagos City league of the Lagos State Basketball Association.
The First Bank team - Elephant Girls and Blue Angels were the defending champion and 2nd runners-up of both championship and have resolved to double its efforts for the championships this year as most female clubsides have decided to give the bankers a run for their money and talents.
The Blue Angels will begin the fight for a final-8 ticket of the Zenith Bank/NBBF Championship in Asaba, Delta State from July 3 against some scrapy opposition like the 2005 surprised team, Sunshine Angels basketball club of Akure, Edo Queens of Benin, Customs basketball club of Lagos and green horn Amazons basketball club of Lagos. The two top teams in this arrangement qualifies for the final-8 playoffs schedule to hold at the sports hall of the Lagos National Stadium in August this year.
The more enterprising Elephant Girls will begin the defence of the title it won last year in Akure the Ondo State capital against its arch rival and 2005 runners-up, Dolphins basketball club, Delta Force basketball club of Asaba, Oluyole Babes of Ibadan and Bayelsa Queens from July 8 through 12.
The third group/conference will hold in Bauchi with siox teams fighting for honours, these includes, Bauchi Queens basketball club, Plateau Rocks of Jos, AHIP basketball club of Kano, Nigeria Immigration also of kano Scorpion Sparks basketball of Abuja and Benue Queens basketball club of makurdi. The six teams will try to outwit one another from July 23 to 27.
According to the coordinator of the 2006 edition of the championship retired Col. Sam Ahmedu that there would be a second chance for third and fourth placed teams from the three conference to have a shot at the final-8 playoffs when they gather in Abuja for another round of basketball action from August 4 to 8.
The female fixtures of the City league will role off at the end of the two conferences (Asaba and Akure) which analysts have described as a good timing by the organisers of the state league which serve as a complimentary role to that of the NBBF.
