KENYA : KCB prepare to defend record from Ulinzi raid

By CAXTON APOLLO

National men's basketball league champions Ulinzi Warriors will take on rivals Kenya Commercial Bank Lions in a first leg match at Nyayo Stadium from 4pm today.

Both teams are unbeaten in the competition that got underway in April.

Ulinzi Warriors head the table standings with 12 points after winning all their six matches. KCB Lions have also registered five straight victories and are second with 10 points.

The soldiers are still smarting from their loss to the bankers in the regional cup final in Nairobi two months ago.

Lions needed double extra-time to beat determined Tigers of USIU 91-83 last weekend. The bankers, under coach Francis Ngunjiri, are expected to deploy Ikapian Juma, Greg Odera, Tobias Onyango and new-comer Lewis Muya to end the soldiers unbeaten run.

Ulinzi are also still fresh from their 76-62 win over Pirates. Their shooting forwards Moses Shida, Ancette Wafula, Richard Osano are expected to coordinate well with guard Simon Mugambi to strongly defend their clean record.

In other matches, Pirates, led by Griffins Ligare, Emmanuel Sande and Martin Obure, will host visiting Nakuru Club at 2pm.

In Division One, Don Bosco play Nairobi Pentecostal Church at 9am while Java Warriors will lock horns with Telkom from 10.30am.

In Kisumu, Kisumu Lakeside will face stiff challenge when they host Juja-based Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology at noon.

In Mombasa, three-time women’s champions Kenya Ports Authority start as favourites against Telkom at 2pm. The dockwomen, led by scorer Rose Ouma, Gladys Wanyama and Millicent Anyango, have won all their four matches while Telkom are winless in two outings.

Tomorrow in Nairobi, Tigers of USIU-A will return to Nyayo Stadium to meet University of Nairobi Terrorists in a tie they should harvest maximum points at 2pm.

The Flames of USIU-A have an easy assignment against winless University of Nairobi’s Dynamites from 12pm.

In Division One, Lomboritz will tackle Strathmore University from 9am while Sprite Storms play JKUAT in a women’s showdown.
