KENYA : Yana spin round sad JKUAT
Yana crossed the century mark when they humiliated Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology 101-37 in a one-sided women's basketball Premier League tie at Nairobi's Nyayo Stadium yesterday.
In other matches, Strathmore University registered an 88-83 win over Don Bosco while Lomboritz fought from behind to beat JKUAT 60-58 in a men's Division One league encounter.
Yana who registered the highest score in the women's competition in Nairobi this season, had Judith Akoth and Carol Achieng shooting 100 per cent to lead 13-6 in the first quarter.
JKUAT failed to show any determination as Achieng and Linda Anyango continued to punish them heavily as Yana went up again 24-12 in the second quarter. It remained a one-sided show with Yana leading 37-18 at half-time.
In the men's Division One league category, Ramadhan Almas scored 26 points while Paul Nyakinda added 22 as Strathmore University defeated the unlucky Don Bosco 88-83. Strathmore raced to a narrow 39-36 half-time lead before Don Bosco worked hard to go up 25-22 in the third quarter.
Strathmore used the last quarter as their secret weapon demolishing their opponents 38-22. Edward Ratemo shot 20 and Horrace Odhiambo replied with 24 for Don Bosco.
Lomboritz battled from behind to beat hard-fighting JKUAT 60-58 after trailing 29-27 at half-time. Anthony Onyango scored 16 points and Samuel Kyalo had 13 for Lomboritz. Rogers Kimtai and Alex Olaba each replied with 19 points for the losers.
On Saturday, Ulinzi Warriors maintained their unbeaten run when they registered an 85-80 win over Co-operative Bank of Kenya at Nyayo.
In others matches, Sprite Storms pipped Telkom 48-47 while Telkom men's team registered a 72-67 victory over the Juja-based Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
In Mombasa, Coast Youth Centre shocked the United States International University 68-66 to register their first win in an ill-tempered match at the KPA Gymnasium.
USIU also lost to KPA in the women's action with the hosts winning 103-39.
The CYC vs USIU clash, which the self sponsored coastals dominated from the start, saw Dennis Miruka of USIU and Sammy Chone of CYC, disqualified for brawling.
CYC who must thank US bound Kennedy Okello for the win took a commanding 17-09 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Okello who had an outstanding game scored a game high 26 points including the last basket on the stroke of time when the teams were deadlocked 66-66.
