BOTTSWANA: Basketball League Kicks-Off
The Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) national league started over the weekend with a series of matches in Gaborone and Selebi-Phikwe. Just like last year, the league has not been sponsored. However, BBA secretary general Mothusi Thipe told Mmegi Sport that they are negotiating with a potential sponsor.
"Our league has to run with the international basketball league circle, so we will continue to negotiate while the league continues," he said. This year's Botswana basketball men's league has 14 teams while women have four. Thipe said the small number of teams in the women's competition is a cause for concern and something needs to be done. Last year, there were five women teams but one dropped out because of financial constraints.
Thipe said they will get more teams in the coming season. He said a number of teams are only left with few formalities to become full BBA members. Meanwhile, in games played over the weekend, Thebephatshwa-based Eagles lost 115-60 to defending champions Cadets. The army side was no match for the foreign-dominated Cadets, who did as they pleased. The teams went for a recess with Cadets leading Eagles by 25 to 15.
In another scintillating encounter over the weekend, the marauding Spartans walloped BDF V 91-69. In the women's competition, Vixens wallo ped Relics 38-12 while champions Troopers trounced Thebephatshwa 123-12. Molepolole Basketball club saw red as Spartans walloped it 124-36. The first leg of the league is scheduled to end in July.
