NIGERIA: Vmobile League: Potters Slide Over Kano Pillars

Niger Potters of Minna opened their campaign at home in the Vmobile Premier Basketball League for this season on Sunday with a sneak victory over Kano Pillars. Former league champions, Potters defeated Pillars 58-57 to take a good stand on the table as the regular season swept past Week Three. It was the very first game at the Federal Government owned facility in Minna for this season. The gymnasium underwent extensive renovation by Vmobile, the sponsors of Nigeria’s flagship basketball championship.
The delay by the contractor in finishing the job that required changing the floor, roof and lightening system amongst others, forced the games at the venue to be on hold while Potters played their away game.
Before the two powerhouses of the Savannah Conference took to the court hardly anybody could make excellent predictions and it turned out so the host team managed only a points win. The result means that Pillars have lost their first game after going into the match unbeaten.
The match started and ran with a lot of suspense and fans had to wait until the buzzer before they could get a clear answer to the day’s result.
The result notwithstanding, both teams are highly tipped to make the Conference and national play offs from that zone.
In Lagos, Ebun Comets were pre-match favourites and the erstwhile champions lived up to the expectations by beating Delta Force 73-62 in a game played also Sunday night at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Delta Force led momentarily at 7-6 in the first quarter and that was the only time the Asaba-based team led all through the game. Comets took the first quarter 18-12 and won the second 19-14. When the teams returned from the break, the winners continued with a 14-12 win but Delta got back late and won the fourth quarter by 24-22 but their fight came too late.
“When we lost; it was just a normal and a good game as you could have seen,” the Delta coach Lati Erinfolami said after the game.
The result means that the Comets have won two out of the three games played so far but it means another loss for the other team. Delta Force, like the Customs are yet to win a game this season.
