KENYA: Maseno picked for Burundi affair

Reigning national schools basketball boys champions Maseno School have been nominated to represent the country in the East Africa junior championships in Burundi next month.

School principal Paul Otula said they had been nominated by KBF chairman Agina Wasonga and would be using the national championships as part of the teams preparations for the regional event which will be used to select the team for the Africa junior championships.

"We have received the invitation and we will be in Burundi. My boys are determined to win and qualify to defend the Africa championship which we won in Durban, South Africa, three year’s ago," Otula who doubles as the teams head coach said.

"Yes we are here to retain the national championships but have a double duty to ensure that players are not injured or exhausted ahead of the East Africa junior championships which is a bigger event," he said.

Otula said his players would report straight to camp after the national championships to fine tune for the regional event.

Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley and hosts Coast reported to camp on Sunday a day before the official reporting date yesterday signaling the seriousness the teams have attached to this years championships.

Coast teams have been in camp for a week at different camping sites and only arrived at the venues On Sunday to have a feel of the grounds.

Immediately the teams arrived in camp, they preferred to train in isolation with each coach avoiding being scouted by his opponents.

Tigoi girls, Raliew Secondary from Nyanza and Laiser Hill basketball teams went through morning training session with stoppages whenever they spotted un unfamiliar face around the court while Maseno, Kisumu Day, Mombasa High and Matuga Girls preferred to train in the afternoon.
