UGANDA: MTN League Kick Off Pushed to Thursday
Commencement of the eagerly awaited MTN Basketball League that was scheduled for this evening has been pushed to Thursday next week.
Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (Fuba) Public Relations Officer Carol Nantalo confirmed to Daily Monitor yesterday that the opening ceremony was given another week.
"Yes, it has been postponed to Thursday because of a few problems, but the fixture and the venue remain the same," Nantalo said.
Fuba's Elliot Bagenda said the major reason for the postponement of the league was delayed registration of the teams. Most teams apart from men's champions Marines, UCU, Flammers and new side DRUU shunned the registration that required payment of Shs120,000.
This will be the fifth year for MTN to sponsor the league. The sponsorship package has grown from Shs5m in 2002 to Shs7m in 2003, Shs15m in 2004 and Shs60m last year.
Defending champions Nkumba Marines will open against Falcons, while the top women's side A-1 Challenge begin their defence against Makerere Sparks.
