ZIMBABWE: Life getting tougher for basketball association

By Paul Munyuki

LIFE just seems to be getting tougher by the day for the Harare Basketball Association.

With less that a week to the annual Basketball Union of Zimbabwe inter provincial tournament scheduled for Gweru, the HBA is yet to find a sponsor for both their trip and the teams’ upkeep in the Midlands capital.

The association had been hoping that they would get a sponsor before the end of this week as the tournament is scheduled for next weekend.

The four teams — two senior sides and two junior teams — are supposed to leave the capital on Friday and by yesterday evening the association was making frantic efforts to raise enough funds for both transport and food.

HBA committee member Tendai Zhakata said that they would be in trouble if they do not reach the required target to send the teams.

"We are in trouble and we are just hoping that we get a sponsor as soon as possible.

"We had earlier indicated that we might just send the junior teams to the games but from the look of things we could be heading for disaster if we do not get a sponsor for the games," said Zhakata.

Away from the administrative woes, Highdon Raiderz face an uphill task when they take on national champions Cameo in the league today.

Highdon Raiderz are still reeling from the defeat they suffered last weekend and the game against Cameo could prove to be a tricky one.
