TANZANIA: Union Basketball League
By Burton Brown
Zanzibar is the venue of this year’s edition of the Union Cup basketball Championship scheduled to take place in the Isles from March 13th to 18th this year.
The Secretary General of Tanzania Basketball Federation, Lawrence Cheyo told The Express this week that eight teams had qualified to play in the event.
He said there would be four teams from Tanzania Mainland and the remaining four from the Isles.
According to Cheyo, the tournament would also bring together eight teams, from the mainland with another four to be picked in Zanzibar.
On the mainland side, Cheyo said all teams that won tickets to play in Zanzibar had showed their quality in the just-ended National Basketball League which took place in Morogoro in January.
The ones in the women’s sector include the national champions, JKT Stars, runners up, Cargo Ladies, Prisons and Young Warriors.
In the men’s sector, JKT (MMJKT) will lead the other three teams in Zanzibar. Those who also won tickets to play in the league are runners up Savio, second runners up JKT Oljoro and Pazi.
However, Cheyo said the Basketball Association of Zanzibar (BAZA) was yet to inform TBF on the date of the tournament.
