NIGERIA : It’s First Bank all the way
Reigning Nigeria Women league champion, First Bank basketball club of Lagos prove her invincibility once again by winning the first phase of the Zenith Bank Women Premier league without dropping a point.
The Elephant Girls as the team is also known handed down a 80-50 points defeat of close rival Dolphins basketball club also of Lagos in the last day of the first phase Saturday played at the Sports Hall of the Abuja National Stadium to maintain a hundred percent record winning all nine matches played to garner 18 points ahead of others.
To lead other nine team to the second phase slated for Enugu next month the Adewumi Aderemi tutored First Bank team scored a whopping 717 points while conceding 312 making them the best offense and defense team in the first phase which is a plus for them, a record that other teams would fight hard to surpass.
Dolphins and Delta Force of Asaba were tied with 16 points but Dolphins is second on technical ground having defeated the Lateef Erinfolami tutored Asaba-based Delta Force 58-56 in day-6 of the phase, Scott Nnaji coached Customs basketball club placed fourth with 15 points winnning 6 games and losing three to record 15 points overall.
Sunshine Angels basketball club of Akure who provided one of the surprises of the league when it defeated highly rated Dolphins 68-61 points in day-4 of the league finished fifth with a 6-3 record for a cumulative 15 points same points as Customs but have to move down the ladder on technical ground having lost to the border girls by 75-72 points on day-2 of the league.
Nigeria Immigration Service basketball club of Kano makes some progress this time finishing sixth with a record of 4-5 ahead of Amazons basketball club of Lagos who is seventh with a record of 3-6, AHIP basketball club of Kano occupies the eighth position with a record of 1-8 while the two newly promoted teams FCT Angels and Plateau Rocks both occupy the ninth and tenth slot going into the second phase coming up in Enugu.
Secretary General of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Francis Gbiri applauded the teams for their performance and wishes them well in the second phase and final leg of the Zenith Bank league billed for Lagos in July.
