NIGERIA : ‘Angolans Here to Fight’

The assistant coach of Angola’s Petro Atletico and who is also the assistant of the Angolan national team Arthur Barros has taken an expert view of the 21st African Champions Cup for Men holding in Lagos and declared that his players were coming to the championship to stake their status.
“We are here very prepared for team and we have selected our very best for this event. We have another players coming in from the United States of America. I cannot say we are going to win this cup but I can say categorically that we here to play and play well. We putting in our best and fight with everything we have to achieve success. We are here to fight hard because it’s a long journey from home,” Barros said at the Lagos National Stadium yesterday.
Barros spoke for his team but also made positive references to the country’s other team for the championship starting this weekend Primero de Agosto.
Barros’ confidence has been bolstered by the records of the players on the rosters of the two teams. Petro, whose officials arrived Lagos on Friday, have five players from the national team that featured at the FIBA World Championship – Japan 2006 – last August. Primero also has five members of that team heading for Lagos 2006.
By their travel plans, the Angolans are expected in Lagos today while Inter Club of Congo Brazzaville was expected to touch down yesterday.
Ten other teams, including hosts Dodan Warriors are featuring in the championship. The others are Plateau Peaks of Jos – Nigeria’s other team, Club Onatra of DR Congo, BACK of Guinea and Kenya Commercial Bank. ABC, Africa Sport and Zenith are from Cote d’Ivoire while ESPN are coming in from South Africa.
Ahead of the opening ceremony on Saturday, work has intensified at the National Stadium. The lighting system is being overhauled completely and the entire surrounding taking a new look. The event with multi sponsorship would be telecast live on SuperSport.
