Titans!” screamed the ‘latest’ post on the university side’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
Immediate reactions were as concise. While the three parties involved – Malinga, KIU and Stanbic Warriors - may have differences on the reported move, they all concur the player is still a Warrior. Officially, at least!
“It’s not decided as Warriors have not released me as yet,” Malinga, 35, told Daily Monitor on Wednesday, his nuance that of a man as if already decided on a move, “So it is tricky right now to say.” The centre added: “Until my transfer is officially made, I’m still a Warriors player; I still have a year with them.”
Asked if he has held talks or is talking with KIU, Malinga was tact. “I have been approached by several clubs.” While Malinga sounds seemingly decided, Warriors CEO Ivan Ntabazi insists they will not let go easily. “As far as we are concerned he is still under contract with us,” said Ntabazi.
“We shall keep him at all costs. I’m going to talk to him and see what his issues are and we see how to sort them. “KIU can say whatever they want but they know the right procedures.” It is understood that KIU may have to part with at least Shs10m if they are to have Malinga. KIU sports tutor Patrick Egwel, however, remains optimistic.
“The Malinga issue is still in-house,” he said, “It is still unresolved. “Warriors insist that the player is still contracted to them but the player is very categorical that he wants out. We shall know in the next few days.”
