KENYA : USIU Flames claim historic Zone V title

Hilda Indasi who did not feature in earlier games was a major boost scoring nine points, four rebounds and making four assists as USIU-A Flames beat KPA 63-28 in the Zone V final.

University- Africa (USIU-A) ladies basketball club won its first-ever
Zone V title beating Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 63-28 in the final game
played on Sunday in Mombasa.
The win ensured the title remains in Kenya after 2013 champions Eagle Wings failed to defend at this year’s tourney.
It was the second year running that the final was an all-Kenyan affair and USIU-A stole the show from tip off.
Returning Hilda Indasi who did not feature in earlier games was a boost for the team scoring 9 points, 4 rebounds and making 4 assists.
The students led 27-19 at the breather after winning the first and second quarters 13-12 and 14-7 respectively.
The third quarter was a one-sided affair as USIU-A scored 18 unreplied points before wrapping up the win in the fourth quarter 18-9.
Sarah Chan scored 19 points for USIU-A and grabbed 18 rebounds while Georgia Otieno added 10 points and 4 rebounds to her name.
KPAs highest scorer was Yvone Akinyi with 8 points and 5 rebounds. USIU-A scored 40 points from the 2-point shots in 55 attempts, nine points from the 3-point line after 12 attempts and made 14 free throws.
KPA had 40 attempts at the 2-point shots scoring 16 points, made 3 shots from the 3-point line and scored only 3 free throws from 8 attempts.
In the semifinal, USIU-A beat KCCA 74-48 while KPA sailed past Berco Stars of Burundi 61-48. KCCA finished third after seeing off Berco Stars 69-61 in their playoff game.
Lamunu Claire scored a game high 36 points for KCCA while Nezerzwa Ines scored 23 points for Berco Stars.
Urunani retain title
In the men category, KPA failed in the last hurdle losing 59-68 to defending champions Urunani from Burundi.
Urunani won the first quarter 14-6 but lost the second 17-15 to lead 29-23 at halftime. KPA was intent on making a comeback upon resumption winning the third quarter 15-12 but their fighting power withered in the fourth quarter as Urunani won 27-21.
Hakizimana Elvis top scored for Urunani with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists as Ariel Okal scored 12 points, 9 rebounds and one steal for KPA. Overall, KPA had 43 rebounds against Urunani’s 47.
The dockers scored 32 points from the 2-point shots after 54 attempts, 9 points from the 3-point line in 19 attempts and 18 free throws.
Urunani had 22 attempts at the 3-point line but scored thrice, 48 points came off the 2-point shots after 44 attempts and 11 free throws from 24 attempts. In the semifinal, KPA beat Uganda’s Tigerhead Power 81-66.
Another Ugandan side City Oilers was ranked third after beating Tigerhead 71-67 in the playoff. Jimmy Enabu scored 24 points for Oilers with Kami Kabage adding 21. Afrda Isaac top scored for Tigerhead with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
