Zanzibar — MAINLAND teams ABC and Don Bosco
Lioness excelled in the just ended Union Basketball League after being
crowned champions in both, men's and women's category respectively.
The five-day event climaxed on Thursday at the Gymkhana Club court
and the two Mainland finished top of their respective league categories,
putting host teams in the shadow.
Defending champions ABC managed to retain the men's title for the
second successive years after collecting eight points, winning all their
four games on their way to glory.
The unstoppable ABC side kicked their campaign with a 65- 51 win over
Polisi Zanzibar before thrashing African Magic 79-49 in the second
game.
They also clobbered Rangers 85-50 and wound up their title defence by
beating Stone Town. Polisi settled for the second position on seven
points, while Stone Town won third place despite tying on five points
with African Magic. Stone Town secured third place courtesy of goal
average.
Rangers finished bottom of the table with four points. In women's
category, Don Bosco Lioness were undisputed winners after winning all
their four matches to finish the league with eight points.
African Magic took the second slot on goal average over Nyuki after
the two teams tied on five points each. The two teams registered one
victory each, while conceding three defeats.
The winners were presented with trophies and certificates by the
former Prime Minister Fredrick Sumaye who was the guest of honour in the
final day of the championship.
The tournament brought together eight teams, two from Mainland and
six from Zanzibar. The men's league featured five teams with three of
them competing in women's category.
