The much anticipated kickoff to the 2014 national league season of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) will finally take place today at the sports commission gymnasium on Broad Street in Monrovia with the top flight defending champs beginning the defense to their title.
According to fixtures released by the secretariat of the Basketball Association, LPRC Oilers will kick-off their season by playing host to Bardnersville Celtics.
The late evening game will be preceded by a lower division clash between Kardinals and Deviers at the Sports Commission.
Oilers are defending the top tier championship of Liberian basketball for a record 3-times in a row and their strength over the last three seasons have been bolstered by some top notch players from rival teams NPA Pythons, Uhuru Kings and Mighty Barrolle.
Competition day-2 (April 3) brings Uhuru Prince and Duport Road Runners face to face, while on the same day, the last action will unfold between Sac Base and Supreme Brothers.
Flames will get a taste of the new season on Friday as they tackle Dream Team-II in the top division. The two fixtures that come on before that 1st division action involve Bushrod Bulls and Heats, FUBBA vs. Harbel Pointers.
First phase activities of the national basketball league season are expected to be concluded on May 10, 2014. Meanwhile, a refresher workshop was held Tuesday evening at the Broad Street headquarters of the Basketball Association. This daylong clinic takes place at the start of each basketball season in Liberia to abreast coaches and referees with new and revised rules and regulations of FIBA, the parent body of the game globally.
LBA Technical Committee Chairman Eric Williams who is also a former President of the Liberia Athletics Federation served as the lead facilitator, alongside Solomon Johnson, the Chief referee and the Secretary General of the local Basketball Association Allen Goodridge. Both men provided professional lectures on how proceedings would go during the 2014 national league season.
