Cercle Sportif de Kigali basketball club (CSK) have signed forward Mike Buzangu from rivals KBC after his proposed move to champions Espoir fell through for undisclosed reasons.
The Congo-born Rwandan international Buzangu joins the 2011 league champions on a two-year contract until end of the 2015 season.
Buzangu, one of the best forwards in the league, had been widely tipped to sign for the two-time league and playoffs reigning champions Espoir after training with them for six weeks but his move was blocked by the club’s general assembly citing his high financial demands, according to officials.
Buzangu also featured for the army side APR for two years before crossing to KBC in 2012.
His arrival at the Rugunga-based side will boost their hopes of putting up a formidable challenge in the league title race alongside favourites and defending champions Espoir, KBC and APR.
CSK have so far won two and lost one of their three league matches this season. They lost to Espoir but managed to beat last year’s second runners-up Rusizi and newcomers Gisenyi basketball club.
“The arrival of Mike (Buzangu) means a lot to this club because of his vast experience and knowledge of the game. He is one of the best players in the country, so we are excited to have him on board,” CSK head coach Janvier Kamanzi told Times Sport on Wednesday
“He is a player any team would love to have and I believe he will help us to attain our targets for this season. We want to win the league that is why we signed him,” Kamanzi noted but refused to reveal details of his deal.
Buzangu, who featured for Espoir as they beat APR to win the preseason tournament early last month, is expected to make his CSK debut on Friday against United Generation basketball club (UGB).
