ZAMBIA : ZBA in Talks Over League Games Broadcast
THE Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) is in talks with the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and African pay television giants, SuperSport on the possibility of showing the 2014 league games.
ZBA vice president south, Conrad Musonda said in an interview that discussions with the two televisions stations had reached an advanced stage and should be concluded before the league starts in April. Musonda said the deal was expected to be concluded before the commencement of the northern and southern region leagues in April.
He said the development would be a milestone achievement for the ZBA led Shawki Fawaz interim executive committee as it will expose Zambia's immense basketball talent to the outside world and that televising league games would also promote competition among local clubs.
"We started talks on the possibility of showing our basketball games for the 2014 season and I can confirm that the talks have been progressing well and we hope to finalise the deal with both or any of the two institutions before the season starts," he said.
"Our dream has always been to improve the standards of basketball in the country and we are happy that this executive is making positive indications towards realising that goal," he added. Meanwhile, Musonda announced his candidature to re-contest his position at the forthcoming elective annual general meeting (AGM) slated for March 15 in Kitwe.
He becomes the third person in the interim ZBA executive committee to announce his candidature after Fawaz and vice president north Andrew Nyirenda announced last week.
Musonda said the interim executive that was ushered in office in July last year during an emergency meeting held in Lusaka had lined various programmes that would transform the face of the sport in Zambia. He said attracting more sponsors and improvement of existing basketball infrastructure as well as the constructing of new arenas were high on the ZBA agenda for 2014 and beyond.
"Certainly, we want to get solid with sponsorship for the national teams and leagues, and in addition to that, we want to build two big basketball arenas on the Copperbelt and in Lusaka in order to cater for the ever-growing fan base in the country," he said.
