UGANDA : Kagoro Sets Sights On Falcons Renaissance

It is seven years since Falcons, the most successful club in Ugandan basketball, won the league title.
To many Falcon fans, it is a disastrous run and, to some, a nightmare. They have witnessed the team's dirty linen being exposed in public when skipper Stephen Omony revealed that the club was not honouring his financial contract.
They witnessed a mass exodus of players in 2010 and had to endure the passing of club founder John Simbwa. They have also had to see their club flirt with relegation in 2011 and missed a play-offs appearance for the only time.
For the past two seasons, however, they have finished runners-up and ahead of 2014 season that kicks off in April, Falcons have made some changes which they believe will ensure a seventh title.
On Wednesday, Friday Robert Kagoro assumed the role of new club chairman from Denis Mbidde, who stepped down last year. Kagoro is not a common figure in the sports circles but has hit the ground running as he aims to take the team a step better.
One of the first changes he has made was to appoint former player Sam Obol as new head coach after Gad Eteu switched his services to Warriors. Kagoro also announced that only two players: Jeff Omondi and Herbert Akitah have been released to City Oilers and Charging Rhinos respectively.
"We still have all our players and we are assembling a team that will shock many people next season."
He also formed a technical committee headed by Omony, which is tasked with securing sponsorship and recruitment of players. So far they have managed to re-sign small forward Emmanuel Ateng who has been away on studies in India.
"In a fortnight, we will be announcing a number of more changes in the club which are going to take many by storm," Kagoro told The Observer.
Granted, it remains to be seen whether he will live up to the billing.
