DAR-ES-SALAAM, Tanzania will host the 16th edition of the East and Central Africa Inter cities basketball championships in May, officials revealed yesterday. The regional body secretary, Ronnie Owino, said the event will run from May 6-11, adding invitations have already been sent to most cities in the region.
"We have confirmed that Dar will host the championships this year. Kampala had expressed interest again but since they have hosted the last two tournament, we deemed it fit to give a chance to other cities," he said.
Owino, who is also the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) chairman, said Nairobi will send a team to the show. Nairobi (women) and Mombasa (men) are the defending champions.
"We will soon be reaching out to our friends both corporate and individuals to help us raise funds to send our men and women's sides to the event. For the last few years, this is what we have always done," he said.
Nairobi women have won the highest number of trophies in this tournaments--claiming 11 of the 15. Dar, Tanga, Mwanza, Arusha, Kampala, Entebbe, Nairobi, Mombasa and Mogadishu have confirmed entry for the event.
