UGANDA : ANBL Playoffs: Power beat Oilers 79-72 to take series lead

Game 1: Dmark Power 79-72 City Oilers (Power lead series 1-0)
Game 1: UCU Lady Canons 65-32 A1 Challenge (UCU lead series 1-0)
Dmark Power took advantage of City Oilers poor start and assumed control of game 1 of the Castle Lite best of five playoffs semi finals en-route to 79-72 win on Wednesday night at YMCA. Isaac Afidra led Power’s balanced offense with 14 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.
“We were mentally short from the start” City Oilers’ coach, Mandy Juruni told Kawowo Sports.
After taking the first quarter 20-12, Power pushed the lead double figures at the start of the second quarter which they maintained through the period and the third quarter. The Oilers tried to rally back in the fourth quarter and seemed to be in position of complete come back when they came with 5 points midway through the frame but a quick basket from Power’s center, Derrick Mbusi (6 points) put Oilers come back to sleep.
“We got a bad start and we couldn’t completely come back. We lacked the energy” Juruni said.
Norman Blick and Joseph Ikong contributed 12 points apiece for Power. Paul Odong had 11 points and Ben Komakech chipped in with 10 points. Paul Mwaka picked team high 9 rebounds to go with 8 points.
“We started well and lost some concentration as the game progressed but we got the win” Power’s guard Joseph Ikong said.
Oilers were without their starting shooting guard Jimmy Enabu. “He has malaria. Hopefully he will be ok for game 2” Juruni on Enabu’s absence. Daniel Jukko stepped in for him and scored 15 points.
Kami Kabange scored game high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace Oilers. Arou Ramadhan added 12 points and 13 boards.
Game 2 is on Sunday, 5:30pm at the Lugogo MTN Arena.
Meanwhile all the intrigue of the women’s semi finals game 1 between UCU Lady Canons and A1 Challenge was gone shortly after tip-off. UCU dominated from tip off and blew out A1 65-32.
Peace Proscovia scored game high 18 points and grabbed 28 rebounds to lead Lady Canons. Purity Odhiambo added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Moreen Amoding chipped in with 11 points and made 5 assists.
Mariam Birungi scored team high 9 points and Hatima Kassim added 5 points as A1 were stymied into a 10-for-45 shooting inside the arc and 2-for-25 beyond the arc. The loss was A1’s first since being edged 60-55 by the same opponents in the regular season.
Game 2 is on Sunday, 1:30pm at the Lugogo MTN Arena.
