KENYA : Tactical Ulinzi gun down KPA, Eagles soar

Ulinzi Warriors’ unorthodox tactics inside the third quarter paid off handsomely as they came down from 28 points to beat Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, 71-68 at the Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium Sunday.
In a game they seemed to have fallen out of contention as early as the first quarter, the soldiers took advantage of a technical foul against head coach William Balozi to execute their plan.
KPA was leading 49-21, three minutes into the third quarter were played when match referee Justus Akhwesa called for a foul against Ulinzi’s Moses Shida.
This did not go down well with Balozi who protested vehemently attracting the wrath of Akhwesa.
It is at this point Ulinzi decided not to continue playing citing poor lighting inside the gymnasium.
Akhwesa and Eric Omondi, the other referee, gave the soldiers a five minute ultimatum to resume play failure to which they would have lost by default.
The soldiers remained adamant until only a minute was left when they consulted and agreed to continue playing.
However, their bench was given a technical foul for time wastage.
By then, they had managed to slow down the Dockers’ scoring tempo who seemed headed for another century score win after the first leg 100-77 victory in Mombasa.
Ulinzi had suffered an early setback in the match after prolific scorer Tiberius Menya was stretched off in the second quarter with a knock on his knee.
KPA led 40-21 at halftime after winning 25-13 and 15-8 in the opening quarters. Ulinzi fought hard to snatch home the remaining quarters 28-18 and 22-10 in a match they only assumed leadership at the closing stage.
KPA strongly beat Ulinzi on the rebounds scoring several uncontested baskets.
Joseph Ngoshi top scored for Ulinzi with 22 points, grabbing one rebound and an assist while Collins Ouma added 13. Samuel Ocholla and Dickson Aaran had 14 points each for KPA.
Double win for Thunder
The Coastal side had on Saturday registered a 69-52 win over United States International University- Africa, USIU-A, who are missing bereaved head coach David Maina. It was a similar script for the students on Sunday going down 69-61 to Thunder.
USIU led 31-29 at the breather and had Victor Bosire scoring 17 points. Kooshin Diliwe had 13 points for Thunder and Griffin Ligare 12.
It was double win for Thunder this weekend after beating Nairobi Aviation College 68-63 on Saturday.
A day after they lost 56-45 to defending champions Co-operative Bank, University of Nairobi's Terrorist caused a major upset Sunday beating serious title contenders Lions 66-63.
Tobias Onyango scored 19 points for Lions and Victor Ochieng added 18. For Terror, Collins Odhiambo top scored with 15. Blazers earned a walkover against Nakuru Club.
Eagles see off Western and Storms
Eagle Wings roared big in the women premier winning two matches. On Saturday, they beat Western Delight 48-21 helped by 12 points from Annerose Atieno.
Sprite Storms was their next victim Sunday losing 70-42 in a match that saw Vilam Achieng score 19 points for the champions. Susan Akinyi scored 12 for Storms.
USIU-A had an equally fruitful weekend easing 56-21 past Mennonite on Saturday and 64-55 past their bitter rivals Strathmore University Sunday. Leaders Co-operative Bank had an easy time beating Kenyatta University Oryx 57-28.
In Mombasa, KPA beat Safe Spaces 63-31 while Kenya College of Accountancy- University saw off NYTA-Shimba with a 42-31 win.
