UGANDA : UCU Canons enjoy view from the top

The eight play-off slots are almost decided but the two UCU sides – Canons and Lady Canons – are not letting up in finishing the regular season at the top.
Finishing as top seeds when the end of the Airtel National Basketball League regular season winds up next month is definitely a goal of both. Lady Canons are almost there having not lost a game in 16 as they seek to reclaim the women’s league they lost to KCCA Leopards last year.

That run of 16 was helped by a 56-38 victory over KIU Rangers on Sunday at the latter’s home floor in Kansanga. Former MVP Maureen Amoding poured 22 points at a hostile venue.

The rain-affected encounter also had Peace Proscovia score 18 and 14 rebounds to entrench UCU’s place at the top with a 16-0 record, ahead of KCCA in second at 13-3. Their male counterparts are not as dominant but managed to beat KIU Titans 49-34 to complete the season double over the university rivals. Sudi Ulanga scored 16 points and Desmond Owili added 12 and 13 rebound. KIU and UCU welcomed the decision by Fuba to host games at their campuses.
It’s one that has paid off for UCU as they won the first game at home earlier this season. Chris Omanye’s 12 points were too little to keep KIU from losing for the seventh time in 17 games.
