KENYA : Kenyans fall to Nigerians in Afrobasket

  • Eagle Wings Silalei Shani sunk a game high 17 points but it was not enough to get Kenya past the fancied Nigerian side in their second match of the women Afrobasketball championships on Saturday in Maputo.
    Nigeria, winners of the event in 2003 and 2005, were clearly the stronger side against the Kenyans who fell to Cameroon in their opener on Friday took control of the game right from the buzzer as they won the first quarter 17-11.
    They West Africans picked up from where they left off with Sarah Ogoke’s and Ndidi Awele sinking three pointers that gave them a 32-22 lead at the break.
    By the end of the third quarter the Nigerians had opened a 19-point lead as they restricted Kenya to a paltry six points scored only by Shani and USIU's Hildah Indasi.
    Kenya were able to settle in the last quarter which they managed 21 points Nigerians’ 27 but it was a little to late. Awele(17) and Magdalene Ukato (15) ensured the speedy and skilled Nigerians win their match at the Afrobasket after their 60-46 loss to the defending champions Angola the previous day.
    Kenya will face Angola on Sunday while Nigeria squares it out with Mali, Africa's top ranked side.
    The 12 teams championship in the Mozambican capital doubles up as a qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Championships for Women that will be held in Turkey.
