Kenya Basketball Federation women Premier League defending champions Eagle Wings registered 68-46 win over visiting Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Saturday afternoon in an entertaining match staged at Nairobi’s Nyayo Gymnasium.
Eagle Wings soared tough in the opening quarter, bullying their opponents who looked timid and exposed a weak defense. Wings posted a resounding 21-7 win in the first quarter.
“We were very weak in the opening stages of the match but I am glad we recovered well in the second quarter and we were above them.” Said Hellen Oketch.
The former champions came back in the 2nd quarter with more determination and purpose in defense sealing off Samba Mjomba’s three point attempt, in the end, KPA managed 19 points against Eagle Wings’ 13, putting the half time scores at 34-26 in favor of Eagle Wings.
After the break, Eagle Wings stepped up with Silalei Shani, Samba Mjomba and Angela Okoth sinking in points at will, “It was important for us to create a good gap in the first half then just have an easy final two quarters because KPA is equally a technical team who know how to read the game plan. We thank God there was good team work today that helped us communicate well and take home the important points.” Samba Mjomba said after the match.
Eagle Wings won the third quarter 17-11 and totally eclipsed their opponents in the final quarter 17-9 to take home the pride from the ever tight duel.
In an earlier match played at the same venue, Co-op Bank ladies team had an easy outing when they beat league new comers KU Oryx 57-27. Co-op took all the quarters with a 15-6 win in the 1st quarter and followed it up with a 14-10 in the 2nd quarter.
The last two quarters saw them get 14 points in both while Oryx could only get 1 point in the 3rd and topped it up with 10 points in the last quarter to see Co-op claim the day.
Mennonites were awarded a walk over against Western Delight after the Kakamega based team failed to show up for the fixture.
In the Division One matches played, KU Pirates had 74-69 win over Little Prince while Parklands Baptist were lucky when they beat Upper Hill School 76-75.
