KENYA : Aviation shock KPA in Mombasa

  • Nairobi Aviation College defied formbook to upset host Kenya Ports Authority, KPA, 58-48 in a national classic league match played on Sunday at the Makande gymnasium in Mombasa. This was the second win for Aviation this season and comes after a long winless spell.
    Their other win was a 68-66 victory over Blazers in April. KPA had upset Strathmore University 61-43 on Saturday and hoped to replicate the same performance against Aviation.
    It was a different case for the KPA ladies team which beat Storms 62-38 on Saturday and Strathmore University 47-41 on Sunday.
    In Nairobi, United States International University- Africa, USIU-A, beat Mennonite Knights 72-56 to condemn them to their second loss of the weekend.
    Mennonite had lost 77-53 to Lions on Saturday. Against USIU, they fell off the pace after losing the first three quarters 12-6, 22-11 and 22-15. Despite winning the fourth quarter 24-16, the damage had already been done for Mennonite and they ended up losing two precious points.
    Yoni Wanambiro top scored for the students with 20 points while Kevin Macharia had 14. Kooshin Diliwe scored 19 points for Mennonite.
    Their match against Lions was balanced in the opening quarters as they trailed 31-29 at halftime only to lose their momentum upon resumption. Chizza Aristote top scored for Lions with 19 points while Tobias Onyango had 18. Joseph Achega scored 21 points for Mennonite.
    Wings fly past Spaces
    Ladies defending champions Eagle Wings beat Safe Spaces 54-37 to keep up the pace with the leading pack. Janet Akoth scored 15 points for Wings with captain Silalei Shani adding 14.
    Peninah Nthenya top scored for Spaces with 14. Spaces opened the game positively winning the first quarter 14-12 but Wings snatched away the second winning 15-6 to enjoy a 27-20 lead at halftime.
    Wings extended their lead in the third quarter after a convincing 18-5 victory while Spaces won the fourth quarter 12-9.
    On Sunday, Spaces made amends to the loss by beating Kenyatta University Oryx 54-50 in a tightly contested match.
    Oryx was leading 18-13 at halftime. Nthenya called the shots again with 13 points while Betty Kananu scored 14 points for Oryx. Oryx won the first quarter 8-3 before the second tied at 10-10.
    The second half was Spaces’ turning point winning the third and fourth quarters 20-18 and 21-14 to overturn the halftime deficit and win.
    In division one, Zetech College beat Kenya College of Accountancy- University, KCA-U, 57-46 on Saturday while Upperhill ran over Kenya Airports Authority, KAA, with a 87-68 win.
    On Sunday, KCA-U beat Strathmore University 66-51, Equity Bank saw off Kenyatta University Pirates 64-50 and Little Prince was 64-54 winners over Parklands Baptist.
