KCCA overcome A1’s early challenge as Magic storm blows Gladiators

Between a diverse offensive attack and an effective defense, KCCA Leopards looked a championship-caliber team on Sunday evening. KCCA used a strong defensive effort holding A1 Challenge without a basket in the second quarter and 13 points in the second half en route to a 52-29 win. “They guys played very good defense” a delighted KCCA’s coach, Timothy Odeke said.

Leopards (6-0) got the points from usual sources. Flavia oketcho scored game high 12 points and Martha Soigi added 10 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. Soigi was limited to 3 field goals all coming in the final quarter of 8 attempts and Oketcho waited till the third quarter for her first field goal. Hilda Naigaga had 8 points. “We have got a good bench. If one or two top players are kept out they (bench) steps up” Odeke added.

Challenge (1-4) ground and matched Leopards in the first half closing out the period trailing 17-16 but the third quarter scoring drought was the biggest undoing as KCCA ran away into double digit lead and ultimately a blow-out victory for the three time champions. “I think the ladies got tired. They wore out as the game progressed” A1’s coach, Geoffrey Omondi told Kawowo Sports. Vickie Ntale scored 8 points and picked 5 rebounds to lead A1. Olivia Mulwana contributed 6 points.

Meanwhile Magic Stormers beat Gladiators 68-34 in the early Sunday women’s game. Center, Carol Nyafwono scored game high 17 points and picked 19 rebounds to lead Stormers (3-2). Esther Awayo added 16 points and 13 rebounds and Belinda Feni and Sylvia Twesigye had 12 points each. Corneria Atuhaire and Joan Birungi led Gladiators (1-4) with 8 points each and Stella Nikuze chipped in with 6.
